About
It was 1942 and World War II was raging. A war of even greater proportion and longer duration also continued unabated, the spiritual warfare for the souls of humans. A young soldier in that war, James Standifer came to the Bessemer / Hueytown area with a patched up tent and began to hold meetings. A few months later storms destroyed the tent and meetings were held in homes until the small group of people managed to complete their first small cinderblock building. Known then as First Assembly of God, the church was for many years located in a succession of buildings where the I59 18th-19th Street Bessemer / Hueytown exit exists today. In 1968 the interstate took those facilities and a new building was built on Highway 11.
In 1993 the church began purchasing property at its present location on McAshan Drive just off I59 in McCalla. Desiring to leave a church of our Fellowship in our old location, in 2000 the church mothered a predominantly black congregation, New Grace Covenant, and sold our previous building to them. Since 2002, The Crossing has worshipped on our new property in a temporary facility as we prepare to build our new building. God has led us through a profound transformation, stripping away superficial religion to return us to our true selves, the simpler and more honest spirituality of followers of Jesus.
The Crossing is firmly rooted in the ancient faith of the church, deeply grateful for the Spirit-filled, evangelical heritage of our fathers and mothers in the Lord, and determined to be even more committed to following Christ than those who have gone before. Our historic commitment to worship, evangelism and discipleship has been refreshed with a contemporary and relevant vision. The Crossing has become a church where all aspects of genuine New Testament faith are welcomed: authenticity, intelligence, love, community and the supernatural. We are focused on the future, not the past. Our passion remains “Knowing God and making Him known.oming Soon: Historical Information About The Crossing
